Spanish idioms; Verde; Legal terms; Fromlostiano; Gib; and Live Sex.

Here's a nice list of Spanish idioms, with their English equivalents. The latter usually contain fewer syllables, but not always:-
Más vale prevenir que curar = Better safe than sorry
Más vale pájaro en mano que ciento volando =A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
Lo barato sale caro = If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys
Perro ladrador poco mordedor = Barking dogs seldom bite
El gato escaldado del agua fría huye = Once bitten twice shy
Al que madruga Dios le ayuda = The early bird catches the worm
Nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena = Better late than never
Nunca llueve a gusto de todos = One man’s meat is another’s poison
Ojos que no ven, corazón que no siente = Long absent, soon forgotten
Cuantos más, mejor = The more the merrier

Talking of Spanish . . . The adjective verde normally means 'green' but it can also mean 'blue', as in 'dirty joke', or viejo verde, 'dirty old man'. And here are a couple of useful idioms:-
Poner verde a - To run down, slagg off someone.
Darse un verde de algo - To have one's fill of something.
I had a notion that verde could also mean angry but can't find any evidence of this.

Still on Spanish . . . Here's a brief guide to legal terms, for people who've had their collar felt by the law. It may or may not be totally accurate:-
Arrestado: Taken into custody by the police, who have c. 24 hours to take you before a judge or release you.
Acusado: Accused by the police of something, prior to going before the judge. Charged.
Imputado: Imputed or charged by a judge, after questioning and investigation. Sent for trial.
Indultado: Pardoned. The sentence normally applied to Spanish politicians who are unfortunate enough to be both caught and trialled.

Still in Spanish . . . . I was amused to come across this Wiki article yesterday, specifically by the use of my forename: El fromlostiano es una lengua artística de tono humorístico de origen popular, plasmada por Colin (seudónimo de Federico López Socasau) y Güéster (seudónimo de Ignacio Ochoa Santamaría) en el libro "From Lost to the River", de cuyo título deriva su nombre. La lengua se construye traduciendo literalmente delespañol al inglés sin intentar mantener el significado real original. Por ejemplo, 'De perdidos al río', expresión española que indica que en una situación desesperada es mejor realizar una acción arriesgada que en condiciones normales no se intentaría, se traduce al fromlostiano como From lost to the river. El carácter humorístico del lenguaje deriva de que si bien dicha expresión es gramaticalmente correcta en inglés, para un angloparlante que no sepa español no tiene ningún sentido. Por lo tanto, es necesario conocer ambos idiomas (especialmente sus frases hecahs) para entender la gracia.

I have to give a hat tip for both the Fromlostiano finding and the above idioms to this blog, Guirilandia. A must-read for all foreigners(guiris) in Spain.

A Daily Telegraph poll on Gibraltar this week was highjacked by almost a million voters from Spain, with predictable results. Many of the callers came from the Spanish Ministry of Defence and many more from citizens encouraged to register their belief that The Rock should be Spanish. One wonders if the Ministry really thought they could get away with this. My guess is Yes.

Can it really be true that Don Simón Vino Tinto is "The Best Selling Wine in the World"? Has anyone ever drunk it? Anyway, it's now available in 'lightweight' (i. e. plastic) bottles.

Finally . . . The past couple of weeks have suggested that machines have learnt to get past the number+garbled-word security process designed to stop spam being posted to Comment pages. For example, yesterday my inbox told me that someone had posted the following text to this blog. But, when I went to delete it, there was nothing there. So, I thought I would titillate everyone by copying it here, with all the spelling and punctuation errors intact. Who knows, It might do some good for some poor soul or two.

There was, of course, a web page cited but I've omitted it. For those interested, it shouldn't be too difficult to find it:-
