Spain
- Sr Rajoy's is departing as both PM and as leader of the PP party. Cue infighting to succeed him in the latter position. As the two main candidates – both female – are reported to be at each other's throats, it's possible that the Galician president - Sr Feijoo – will come through as the winner.
- Meanwhile, it was amusing to read yesterday that the ex Foreign Minister - Motormouth Margallo - had asserted: I will do everything possible to ensure that [ex VP]Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría is not the spokesperson for the PP. She is the most powerful person in the history of Spain since Godoy and is the only one responsible for wrong strategic decisions. Guess he doesn't like her.
Life in Spain

- Something you might prefer not to know about.
- It's a feature of Spanish life that, as no one here seems to be concerned that everyone will overhear their conversations, you're frequently treated to personal details you really don't want. In my watering hole last night, a guy at the corner had a phone rant which drowned both the music and the conversation of everyone else in the bar. Not that there were many of us, in truth.
The EU
- Here's a nice article on the problems Brussels is having with Poland. A very Catholic country which is stubbornly refusing to be 'liberal'. As regards immigrants in particular.
The USA
- A nice contribution from one of that great country's outstanding nutters.
The UK
- I mention salad cream and the very next day Heinz announces it's planning to change the name to sandwich cream. Just a marketing ploy, say some. Will never happen. I really don't care so long as the taste remains the same.
Galicia/Pontevedra
- This year's spring/early summer weather has been even more capricious than usual. After sweltering in more than 30 degrees 2 weeks ago, I've had to put on an electric heater as I type this today. I might as well be in bloody England.
- Which reminds me . . . I met a British couple on Monday night who are here for all of this cool, wet week. Thank god nothing I've ever written had persuaded them to come here.
- I was a tad surprised to read last week that only Madrid has more asset-rich people than this poor region. 'Asset rich' is defined as having more than €30m. Drugs????
- The other interesting (alleged) fact is that Galicia's rich have emerged from the10 year Crisis seven times richer in assets than before it.
- A less controversial fact – Only 1.5% of petrol(gas) stations here in Galicia are self-service. Apparently there's a lot of resistance to them but I'm not clear as to from whom. Drivers, I suppose.
Finally . . .
- What I'll be wearing this summer in Pontevedra. To make it easier for you to identify me and buy me a drink . . . .
