Thoughts from Madrid: 14.1.19

Well, after many hours of labour but poor dilation, my elder daughter finally gave birth to her son by caesarean around midnight last night.

I might well drive back to Galicia today, after visiting mother and child. Meanwhile, I'm taking a much-needed black coffee in a café I favour on Gran Via. En route here, I was tempted by a glossy alternative place, until I realised it was a bloody MacCafé.

An observation this morning . . . Almost everyone in Cologne and Hamburg wears a woollen beanie. But, at equally low temperatures, almost no one in Madrid does. Possibly for aesthetic reasons.

Finally . .   Last night i saw the last 30m of a football match on the Real Madrid TV channel. Or, rather, what was actually on the screen was nothing but the antics of the manager, with the commentary in the background. Nothing at all of the match was shown, not even the last-minute RM goal. Bizarre. Some wit once said Spanish TV is just radio with pictures but this has to be the best demonsration yet of the validity of this view.

IGIMSTS.
