Spain’s Catholic priests seem to be a pretty liberal lot. 53% of them favour optional celibacy and 43% are happy with the thought of woman priests. But 62% of them regard the current socialist government as ‘laicist and anti-clerical’. Most surprisingly, 63% feel state financing of the Church should stop, which will surely find a loud echo amongst their lay brethren. En passant, I rather get the impression that, in Galicia’s hills, celibacy has been optional for quite some time. Concubinage even.
It makes a change from cash-rich Spanish companies snapping up British banks, airport operators and the like but Iberia is virtually begging British Airways to step in as a white knight and prevent its takeover by an American venture capital firm. This can’t be good for Spanish pride as these things are only supposed to happen one way - as the protracted takeover of a local energy company has recently demonstrated. In this case, the EU has gone so far as to threaten a law suit against the Spanish government for illegal obstructionism.
Early this morning an anonymous reader left this cryptic comment on a recent post:-
“u”
I’m left wondering whether it’s in English, Spanish or Galician. So perhaps he/she would like to explain. Or at least complete the sentence.
Here’s a few of the odd routes to my blog in March:-
prison sentence for slapping husband Spain
extremely talkative toddler
my gastric balloon has been taken out
spanish television nipples
