Ponters Pensées: 14.8.16

Spanish Politics: You have to admire the chutzpah of acting President Rajoy. He's now warned that a third round of elections in one year would make Spain "the laughingstock of Europe". You'd never guess, would you, that he's the stumbling block to the formation of a workable coalition.

Summer Lists from The Local:

  • Cringeworthy Spanish Chat-up Lines here. Hard to believe any of them work. But, then, I've never chatted up a woman in my life. So, what do I know?
  • The Tourist Types to be Seen in Spain here.

The Liberal International Order: The Brexit has put this in jeopardy, says The Economist here. Yea. maybe.

Rudderless Britain?: The Economist is not too optimistic about Britain either. Click here for a dose of pessimism. Or realism, if you prefer.

Galician Fires: These continue to rage, as they do down in nearby North Portugal. The police yesterday announced the arrest on a woman caught in flagrante delicto, setting fire to candles in several places alongside a road. Given that she had previous convictions for this, you'd have thought they'd have tracked her each time she left home. But better late than never.

Galician Politics: There's a wide raft of parties of the Left here and they seem to be having some trouble getting any sort of joint act together. Nothing unusual there, of course, for parties which all think they have the moral high ground and whose members think everyone else is a fascist bastard. Here there's the additional factor of one level or other of Galician nationalism to differentiate the parties/factions: Anyway, here's the parties list as it currently stands:-

Finally . . . Annoying Ads: My 'favourite' at the moment is one which appears every time Sky News 'takes a break'. It starts with a very irritating woman saying - as if - to her partner: Charlie, let's check our credit scores. I don't know the company name as I switch off the sound in a Pavlovian reaction to these words.

Another odd sunrise, which I first thought was born of smoke from the fires which have surrounded the city but finally decided it was fog/sea mist:-

I will post the Google+ panorama when they send it to me . .

Meanwhile, here's some images of an unusual bird couple which visited me this morning. The common rosefinch:-

There's a couple of those rosefinches on the River Lea near me, and since they're actually quite uncommon there's been a throng of men with very expensive lenses in the early hours, fortunately after all the muggers have gone to bed.
