Thoughts from Galicia, Spain: 8.9.18

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable.
- Christopher Howse: A Pilgrim in Spain.

If you've arrived here because of an interest in Galicia or Pontevedra, see my web page here. Garish but informative.

Matters Spanish
Matters Galician and Pontevedran
  • I don't know how they calculate this - other than possibly from the percentage of 'pilgrims' who get a Compostela – but it's reported the the number of these folk reaching Santiago in the June-August period was 156,964, 7% up on last year. August, in fact, saw the second highest number in history, at 60,411, only bested – just - by 2010's Holy Year total of 61,542. Not a good time to visit the city these days.
  • Not only wild boars but also wolves are getting closer to Pontevedra city. One was said this week to have savaged a sheep in Agudelo, Borro.
  • Wild boars now account for 75% of road accidents caused by animals, up from 40% last year. Which is pretty understandable, I guess. What else? Squirrels? Actually the second place goes to corzos, which are roe deer. Followed by the occasional fox. I've never seen any of these on a road. Or anywhere else. Tempting fate?
Finally . . .
  • It's hard to believe that obvious fraudsters such as this one - an ex-con - are allowed in the USA to take advantage of the religiously credulous. Along with others such as the Financial Bible shysters such as this one. Maybe they can in other countries as well but just don't. Or maybe the laws are more lax/tolerant in the laissez-faire USA. As they are with defamation. The Devil take the hindmost, caveat emptor, a fool and his money are soon parted, etc.
