Thoughts from Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain: 4.9.19

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable.
Christopher Howse: A Pilgrim in Spain
Spain
  • Yet another chance to learn how to swear like a real Spaniard, even to the extent of calling your grandmother a cunning stunt.
  • Some Spaniards who might well be swearing pretty hard right now are the 3 ex-Presidents of the PP party who've been charged - along with many minions - of corrupt party financing. To no one's great surprise, I imagine.
  • As regards tourist numbers, Pontevedra has had a record August - all those 'pilgrims'? - but, as predicted, Spain has seen another fall nationally. The good news is that receipts from those who did come were up 2%.
  • Talking of records, it seems our city has had more electricity blackouts this year than ever before. And the council has accused the supplier of taking the piss (tomando el pelo) with its claim that the network is adequate for the demand. Personally, I'm tired of adjusting the clocks on various appliances around the house and now just leave them in error.
  • Months after the last general election, Spain still doesn't have a government. Here and here are reports of what the PSOE prime minister is doing to try to get past an impasse with its potential   partner, the 'far-left' Podemos party. If he continues to fail, there'll be yet another election quite soon. Meanwhile, money might still be flowing from Brussels but not, apparently, from Madrid to the regions. Much to the annoyance of the Galician Xunta, for one.
  • I mentioned a smoker 'pilgrim' yesterday . . . This has reminded me that it's great to be able eat without inhaling your neighbour's smoke. At least indoors. Outside on a terrace - where all the smokers now are - this is virtually guaranteed. Which is annoying in summer, for us non-smokers, that is.
The UK
  • Brexit: If you can understand what's going on and what's going to happen next, please post a concise summary in the Comments below. I am not optimistic.
USA/Nutters Corner
  • I read that Ffart wants mass killers to be subjected to a 'rapid-execution' process. But doesn't he think the slaughters have nothing to do with anything other than the mental health of the perpetrators? If so, he must want to execute insane folk. Who does that remind you of   ? But perhaps it's fake news.
Spanish
  • Words of the Day:-
  1. Pedir. One of many, many irregular verbs in Castellano. Which are far more common than in English when it comes to the most frequently used verbs. One of the main challenges of an 'easier' language.
  2. Postizo: Hairpiece. Wig. Important for Orthodox Jewish wives, who don one before the wedding and then wear one for the rest of their lives. Or maybe just during the marriage.
Finally . . .
  • Still only 5 followers on Twitter. Am not happy with my daughter suggesting it . .
