Thoughts from Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain: 17.12.19

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable.

 Spanish Life
  • An inevitable Xmas development.
  • These are 10 good things to eat in Spain.
  • And these are things you really shouldn't eat.
  • More on what I've called a modern evil. Which, it strikes me, actually reads like an ad. A commissioned article?
  • The Local gives you here all you need to know about the expensive, stressful and 3-4-years-long process of getting Spanish nationality. If you want it because of Brexit fears, you really should have started the day after the referendum. Failing that, your hope has to be that the Transition Period is extended after the end of December 2020.
Galician Life
  • Reader María advises there are actually 3 ways to determine the start date of the seasons - astrological, meteorological, and religious. The first 2 of these are enough, it seems, to confuse my Spanish friends (and me) on when the seasons start and finish. But the Post Office (Correos) is clear - their (reduced) summer hours run from 15 July to 15 September.
  • Talking of the weather . . . The forecasted rains and floods did arrive in Pontevedra city on Sunday night, providing the Campolongo leisure centre with a new swimming pool. Well, a new pool anyway.
  • It often happens that, if you favour a particular cafe or bar in Spain, what you get as a tapa gets bigger over time. Especially, I suspect, if you tip well by Spanish standards. In the café I now favour for my elevenses, the original 2 churros and 1 piece of cake have doubled in the last month. Which is nice but is doing nothing for my campaign to keep my weight stable.
  • Those pesky wild boars are now causing an average of 6 traffic accidents a day in our region.
  • Talking of pigs . . . Pork dishes are very popular here. So, it's worrying to hear that prices are soaring because of massive Chinese demand, arising from swine flu deaths back home.
UK Politics
  • Will there now be another attempt to establish a centrist social democratic party following a schism in the Labour party? If so, will it be more successful than the last one?
  • Meanwhile, said Labour party seems about to replace Jeremy Corbyn by another far left individual. I guess that'll make sense to some folk in the party. At least those who currently control the relevant processes and who aren't yet able to draw the right conclusions from the election last week.
The Way the World
  • According to a study in The Lancet. . . Soaring consumption of junk food has pushed even the poorest countries into an obesity epidemic, scientists say. At least a fifth of the adult population of every low-income nation is now obese or overweight.

  •  Words of the Day:
Paripé: Posturing; Play; Routine.
Tinglado: Racket; Set up
Scape room: Escape room

Finally . . .
  • Good to know: Spicing up your diet with a little chilli pepper could reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes. A study found those who consumed chilli pepper more than 4 times a week had a 44% lower chance of dying from coronary heart disease. The risk of death from a stroke fell by more than 60%.
