Thoughts from Manchester, England: 5.12.18

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable.

Matters English
  • The M6: By pure coincidence, I read this among the Comments on an article on German v. UK railways:- If the UK spent their 'smart motorway' money on railway infrastructure, the outcomes would be better. Setting up a 200 mile long speed trap from London to Preston might make the treasury lick their chops; for the rest of us, this interminable project is a nightmare. Amen to that.

Brexit
  • As we approach with trepidation this most unusual of political weeks at Westminster, we must prepare ourselves for extreme displays of the usual emotional reactions to events. Angry people will be angrier, sad people will be sadder, anxious people will struggle to remain conscious. It’s all part of this great big circus we call Brexit.
  • In the real world outside the British parliament, the chances of any sort of Brexit taking place are reducing by the day. The only thing everyone agrees on is that no one really knows what will happen next and it could be just about anything. My view is also suspended but I cling to the long-standing belief that a no-deal Brexit won't be allowed to happen. But I'm sure I'd have felt the same about a world-war throughout the summer of 1914.
Spanish
  • Word of the Day: Belén (Bethlehem).
Social Media
  • Forget Zuckerberg – the tech giants don’t have to own the future, says this chap.
Finally . . .
  • My grandchildren are still alive, having allowed me to get through until 5.30 this morning.
