Thoughts from Galicia, Spain: 18.4.19

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable.
Christopher Howse: A Pilgrim in Spain
Note: As it's Thursday, several of the items below have been borrowed from Lenox Napier's Business Over Tapas

Spain
  • An interesting, if totally impractical plan, allegedly aimed at impressing female voters of all genders.
  • Spanish monuments that suddenly deserve greater protection, post Notre Dame
  • Lenox has cited this book - Slow Travels in Unsung Spain, by Brett Hetherington and I've just ordered it. I'll let you know if it's as good as the blurb. And the (single) review. From his mother?
  • A possibly interesting addition to my feed, on Madrid.
  • Torrija is one of Spain's seasonal delicacies, if that's the right word. For Easter. Lenox advises, citing someone else, that: This slice of french toast with milk, sugar, cinnamon, egg and maybe honey and even wine, is a delicious Easter treat that has so many calories, you won’t want a second one. I don't think I'll even be bothering with a first one.
  • Here's the Easter weather forecast from The Local. We'll have a couple of sunny days but, beyond that, our forecast is for cloud and rain for the next 2 weeks. Lucky us.
  • A not-before-time development in respect of mobile phone usage.
  • On the one hand, this doesn't seem equitable. On the other . . .
The UK
  • Another non-surprise . . . Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party has surged into the lead for the European elections, according to two opinion polls. Having formed only in January, the party has leapfrogged Labour and the Tories and eaten into Ukip’s support. Europe. Mr Farage hailed the “positive vibes” of the polling for the May 23 election, adding: “There is a long way to go, but it is clear that there is a desire to change politics for good.”  . . .  The People’s Vote campaign seized on the polling as evidence that Labour must commit itself to a second referendum.
The Way of the World
  • Oh, for the days when the conflagration in Notre Dame wouldn't have set the internet ablaze with crazy conspiracy theories. Not that anyone is obliged to read them, of course.
Spanish
Finally . . .
  1. If you use Google Backup and Sync, you might or might not know that it backs up absolutely bloody anything and everything on the cloud, whether you want it to or not. And it considers things such as diagrams and maps you've downloaded or scanned as fotos. But you can change the settings to stop some of this, if you don't want Google et al to know absolutely everything about you. And use a traditional external hard disk back up.
  2. Lenox has posted this video of troops of the Spanish Legion singing their ludicrous signature tune - Fiancé of Death. It always reminds me of the guy responsible for slaughtering thousands in the Badajoz bullring during the Civil War. It's high time they stopped singing it.
