Thoughts from Galicia, Spain: 19.4.19

Spanish life is not always likeable but it is compellingly loveable.

Spain
  • Spain's right wing parties face losing the imminent elections because of a 3-way split in their traditional vote. Here's how the leader of the biggest party - the PP - is trying to prevent this. Essentially, as elsewhere in Europe, moving rightwards to deal with popular anger.
  • If you're new to Spain - or just visiting - Think Spain here tries to explain this weekend to you.
  • A warning about certain phone calls.
  • Our wonderful fresh fish, seafood and meat market has had its upper floor converted into a gastroespacio, due to open very soon. While many of the stands won't yet be manned, it seems I'll finally be able to get some smoked fish here. So, it's not all bad news.
  • We have some superb granite carvers in Galicia - in fact, their school is right behind my house - and they've naturally offered their services to the French. As have the stone and wood restorers who work in the cathedral of Santiago, inter alia.
The UK
  • Talking about popular anger . . . One-pony Farage continues to drive his brand new nag - the Brexit party - to victory in the upcoming European Parliament elections. What fun its MEPs will have in Brussels, even if they're only there for a few weeks.
Europe
  • The eurozone economy has stagnated this month as a manufacturing slowdown in the region’s largest economy - Germany - continued to weigh on growth.  . . .   The eurozone is expected to grow by 1.1% this year, down from the bank’s previous prediction of 1.7% last December. Quite a large and sudden fall. Ambrose Evans Pritchard's pessimism might well prove well-founded.
The USA
Nutters Corner
  • Pete Buttigieg is the first openly gay major party presidential candidate. A certain E.W. Jackson - who nearly because Lt. Governor of Virginia - has warned that, if Buttigieg were to become president, he would use the power of the government to shut down Christian broadcasters, lock up all Christians, and turn America into a “homocracy.
Finally . . .
  • I believe in miracles. Well, in big coincidences anyway. Within an hour of seeing the expression Onwards and upwards in an email from one of my sisters, I read these 2 paragraphs:-
